Start with a free profile on a dating site built for people over 50, or with a local group you would join anyway, and give it a few months. Many of the people asking this question are widowed or divorced and have not been on a first date for decades. They are not sure anyone their age is still looking. Plenty are.
Is it too late?
No. That is the plain answer, and it does not need a figure behind it. People in their sixties and seventies get married, or go on holiday with someone they met a year ago. You have probably seen it happen to a neighbour or a cousin, and nobody thought less of them for it.
You have not changed. The way people find each other has. A generation ago you met through work, church, friends or a dance. Some of that still works. The rest has moved online. A dating site for people over 50 is a list of people who have said, in writing, that they would like to meet someone. A pub or a choir cannot promise you that.
The site is rarely the hard part. Deciding you are allowed to look is. If you were married for a long time, that can take a while, and there is no right date. Some people are ready quite soon and others take years. Start when the idea of a cup of tea with a stranger feels more interesting than frightening. If your husband, wife or partner has died, widowed and dating again in the UK is written for you.
Where do people over 60 actually meet in the UK?
In four places, roughly. Friends and family still introduce people, but slowly, because the people who know you tend to know the same people you do. Things you already do, such as a walking group, a church, a choir or an evening class, put you next to the same faces every week. Groups set up for people of retirement age do the same on purpose. And dating sites built for people over 50 do it with people who have already said they are looking.
u3a runs local groups across the UK where retired people learn things for fun and, in its own words, make friends. Nobody there is on a date, and that is why it works. You meet people over months without any pressure, and if something happens it happens. Walking groups and allotment societies work the same way. If you would rather meet someone the slow way, that is where to start.
A site like SilverSingles is the fast way. Its service agreement says members must be at least 50, so it is meant to have nobody on it half your age. You make a profile, add a photo, and browse people who have done the same. On a free account you can create a profile, add photos and a voice introduction, browse profiles in Flame and Gallery, and join interest groups. There were 22 groups when we looked on 16 September 2026. Sending a private message to anyone needs Silver Select, the paid tier, and that is the main thing a free account cannot do. The glossary explains Flame, Gallery and the rest.
Two things to know before you get your hopes up about the site’s own meet-ups. It lists what it calls a 1:1 Meetup, meaning one member hosting a get-together for one other. When we looked on 15 September 2026, the list showed ten hosts: eight in the United States, one in Germany and one in England whose meet-up had already ended. The five still open to join were all in the United States or Germany. And there is a switch called Global Visibility that decides whether members in other countries can see you, and you them. Whether a new account starts with it on or off is to confirm. You can deal with both. The switch is under Me, Settings, Privacy & Visibility, and there is a step-by-step page on how to only see UK members. Do that on the first day.
What do I say in a first message?
Write something short, about them, that ends with a question. Read their profile before you write, then pick one thing they mentioned and ask about it. “You said you walk on the Downs most weekends. Which bit?” is a good first message. “Hi, how are you?” is not, because it gives the other person nothing to answer.
Leave your late husband or wife, your divorce and your health out of the first message. Those things matter and will come up later, once there is a later. Do not apologise for being new to this either. Nearly everyone on a site for people over 50 is new to this.
If writing a message feels like too much, SilverSingles has a wink, which is a hello without any words. Unlimited winks is one of the Silver Select privileges, so a free account gets a limited number, and how many is to confirm. Some people find that a wink, then a reply, then a message is an easier order than a message first.
Reply within a day or two if someone writes to you. Whether a free account can answer a message, or only send a wink back, is to confirm. If you are not interested, a short polite no is kinder than silence, and most people appreciate it.
How do I stay safe?
Keep money out of it, stay on the site until you have seen the person on a video call, and meet in public in daylight. Those three habits remove most of the risk. Anyone who asks you for money, for any reason, however sad the story, is not someone to keep talking to. Report them on the site and stop replying.
Be a little wary of anyone who wants to move to WhatsApp or email in the first message or two. You can report a member on the site, and the site can act on it. Nothing said in a WhatsApp thread reaches the site, which is usually why they are in a hurry to leave.
SilverSingles states that it does not conduct background checks on members. It does offer three quick checks of its own, a photo check, a phone check and an email link, and they are free for now. What a tick on someone’s profile actually proves is to confirm. A tick says nothing about their intentions, so treat it as one good sign rather than a green light. The signs of a romance scam, and where to report fraud in the UK, are on the safety page.
What will it cost?
It costs nothing to join and look, and there is a fee if you want to send messages. Registering, adding a photo, browsing and joining groups are free. Silver Select is the one paid tier. We do not print prices on this site. The website shows its plans on a screen before you pay, priced in US dollars when a new free account reached it on 17 September 2026, and the iPhone app has its own price list. The two are not the same, so look at the figure on your own screen before you pay, and be clear which of the two you are buying through. Whether a UK member is ever charged in pounds is to confirm.
One warning before you pay anything. Auto-renewal is on by default under the service agreement, so a plan renews itself unless you switch it off. The switch is under Me, Settings, Payment, Payment Details, Renewal Status, and the steps are on cancel auto-renewal. The service agreement allows a refund window of three working days. If you would rather try before deciding, the free account lets you see who is on the site in the UK first. Free vs Silver Select sets out the split.
