To meet someone in your 50s in the UK, look in three places: a dating site for the over-50s, singles events for your age, and groups you would join anyway. Friends are a fourth route, once they actually know you are looking. SilverSingles is one of the over-50s sites, and it only accepts members aged 50 or over. If you are over 60, dating after 60 in the UK answers the same questions for your decade.
Is it harder to meet someone in your 50s?
It feels harder, mostly because ordinary life stops putting single strangers in your path. At 30, work and other people’s weddings did the introductions without anyone trying. By 50 your calendar is full of people you already know, and most of them are spoken for. The Office for National Statistics estimates that 62.1% of adults in England and Wales were living in a couple in 2025.
Still, you are far from the only single person in the room. The same ONS figures track adults who have never married or formed a civil partnership. Their share rose from 32.6% in 2015 to 34.9% in 2025, and the sharpest climbs were in two age brackets: 25 to 34, and 45 to 69, where the share grew by between 4 and 7 percentage points. All three numbers come from the ONS population estimates by marital status for England and Wales, 2025, published on 31 July 2026.
Those figures measure marriage, not single life. Some of the never-married live with a partner, and the numbers leave out everyone who is divorced or widowed, which in your fifties is half the story. What they do prove is that being single at this age is ordinary. Nobody can give you honest odds on how long it takes to meet someone. What you can control is how many new people cross your path in a month, and whether any of them can tell you are available.
Where do people in their 50s actually meet in the UK?
Four places do most of the work. Pick two or three and run them side by side rather than pinning your hopes on one.
- A dating site for people over 50. Everyone on it has already admitted they want to meet someone, which saves a lot of guesswork at the bar. On SilverSingles the profile and the browsing cost nothing, so you can see who is on it in the UK before you decide whether to pay. Making a profile takes 5 screens.
- Singles events for over 50s. Search Eventbrite or Skiddle for "over 50s" and the name of your town, then try again with "speed dating" or "singles" added. Organisers post nights a few weeks ahead, so check once a month rather than writing your town off after one dry search. What those evenings are actually like, and what to do when nothing runs near you, is on speed dating and singles events for over 50s.
- Groups you would enjoy anyway. An evening class, a walking or running club, a choir, a regular volunteering shift. You see the same people every Tuesday, nobody has had to dress up for a date, and the conversation starts with whatever is in front of you. Meetup helps here if you ignore its categories: its Singles Over 50 topic for the United Kingdom listed only 6 groups when we checked on 28 September 2026. Search Meetup for "over 50s" and your town instead, and join something you would happily spend two hours doing even if you met nobody.
- Friends. Tell two people with wide circles that you would be glad to be introduced. Saying it out loud takes ten awkward seconds, and then it is done. People who like you cannot help you if they think you prefer being left alone.
If you have already retired, add u3a to the list. In its own words, “Our members come together to learn for fun in retirement.” There are over 1000 local u3as across the UK, and you can search by postcode or hometown on the u3a website. Because nobody there is officially looking for a partner, the pressure drops right off.
Should I try online dating at 50?
Yes, as part of the mix rather than the whole plan. Age UK’s page on dating in later life, updated on 25 August 2026, notes plainly: “Online dating is now one of the most popular ways of meeting new people.” The real advantage at 50 is that nobody on an over-50s site is pretending they want to stay out until two in the morning.
When we registered on the SilverSingles website on 17 September 2026, the sign-up ran over 5 screens. The first three cover the basics: who you are, who you are looking for, your age, ethnicity and height, then a username, email and password. The fourth asks for a few lines about yourself and the person you hope to meet, and the fifth asks for photos. If you have read older reviews that warn of a twenty-minute personality questionnaire at the door, forget them. There was no questionnaire when we joined. Every screen is shown step by step on how SilverSingles works.
One thing will stop you at the gate if you are not ready for it. At your first log-in, the site opens a verification screen and asks for a clear photo of your face. Until that photo goes up, every member page bounces you straight back to the log-in screen, so have a clear, recent picture of yourself on your phone or computer before you sign up.
A free account lets you do three things: create a profile, add photos and a voice introduction; browse profiles in flame and gallery; and join interest groups and see meet-up listings. Flame (one card at a time) and Gallery (a grid of profiles) are the two ways of looking through members, and the glossary translates the rest of the site’s labels. The interest groups are online chat rooms rather than local clubs, 22 of them when we counted on 16 September 2026. What sits behind Silver Select, the single paid tier, is private messaging and voice or video calls with your number hidden. Whether a free member can reply when a paying member writes first is still to confirm. Free vs Silver Select lays out the full split.
Because the site runs internationally, your first five minutes inside belong to the location settings. A switch called Global Visibility controls whether members in other countries can see you, and you them; whether a brand-new account starts with it on or off is to confirm. Switch it off under Me, Settings, Privacy & Visibility, set your profile Country to United Kingdom, and set Gallery Filters to Living in United Kingdom. Only see UK members shows the screens for all three.
What changes when you date again at 50?
You already have a life with furniture in it, and so does the person across the table. Children may still be at home or boomeranging back from university. Jobs at 50 rarely finish at five. An ex-partner may still be in the picture because you share children, and you probably have a house or a pension you have no intention of tangling up with a stranger’s.
None of that is an obstacle, provided you stop treating a relationship at 55 as if it has to follow the script from 25. Not everyone wants to move in together again. Plenty of couples in their fifties and sixties keep their own front doors and spend weekends and holidays together.
Say early what your week actually looks like. If you have Tuesday evenings and every second weekend free, say so. Someone with a full life of their own will be relieved, not offended.
Keep the marriage history to a sentence on the first coffee. “I was married for twenty years and we divorced three years ago” tells a date everything they need to know in the first hour. If your ex still turns up at family birthdays because of the children, mention that casually too, so it is never a surprise.
Leave money, property and pensions out of the conversation altogether in the early months. You do not need to declare what your house is worth, and anyone who fishes for that over a second drink has saved you a lot of time.
When someone starts to matter, tell your children yourself before they hear it through a cousin. Adult children can be unexpectedly territorial about a parent’s private life; listen kindly, reassure them you are not giving away the family silver, and keep the decision yours.
How do you start without it taking over your life?
Treat it like an evening class rather than a second job. Give the site two evenings a week, half an hour each time: look through new faces, reply to anyone you are talking to, and shut the lid. Checking your phone every twenty minutes turns a quiet Wednesday into a referendum on your personality.
Write your profile properly once so you do not have to keep tinkering with it. On SilverSingles that means two boxes, About Me and About My Match, plus your photos. How to write a dating profile over 50 has five complete examples you can raid for structure, and if staring at an empty box freezes your brain, our free dating profile writer will turn a few rough notes into a first draft.
Keep first meetings low-stakes: coffee or a walk in daylight, an hour with a clear finish line, and your own way home. Saying yes to a flat white is only agreeing to forty-five minutes of conversation.
Write yourself a polite refusal before you ever need one. “It was lovely to meet you on Saturday, though I don’t think we are quite the right match. I wish you the very best with it.” Having the sentence ready in your head makes you much braver about saying yes to a first coffee, because you know how to end it cleanly if it falls flat.
Above all, keep your Tuesdays and Thursdays full of the things you actually like doing. The walking club and the choir keep your spirits up when the inbox is dull.
How do you stay safe?
Keep money out of it completely, stay on the site’s messaging until you have seen the person live on a video call, and meet in public in daylight. Remember what the site itself tells you in its footer: SilverSingles states it does not conduct background checks on members. A charming profile is only someone’s own description of themselves until you have sat opposite them.
Age UK’s guide lists four classic warning signs of romance fraud. Be on your guard with anyone who will “avoid video calls or meeting in person” or “want to move your conversation onto a different platform too quickly”. Watch out too for matches who “message you intensively, overwhelm you with affection, and even declare love very early on”, and anyone who tries to “ask you for money”. On money, Age UK’s rule has no exceptions: “Never send money or financial information about yourself to someone you don't know well or haven't met.”
If a member makes you uneasy, use the site’s reporting tool: the FAQ says you can “report the member from their profile or your conversation with them”. Wider behaviour worth watching for is on red flags when dating in your 50s and 60s, and the safety page has the UK numbers if money has ever changed hands.
