People in their sixties dancing together at a social evening

Speed dating and singles events for over 50s in the UK

Many UK cities have over-50s speed dating nights. How to find one near you in five minutes, and what to try if nothing runs where you live.

Facts checked against the SilverSingles member site, 17 September 2026.

Yes, over-50s speed dating and singles nights run in many UK cities, and the quickest way to find one is to search Eventbrite or Skiddle for “over 50s speed dating” and your town. Where nothing runs, a dating site for people over 50 is the fallback. Organisers sell tickets by age band, so the people across the table are in your own decade, and turning up on your own is completely standard. If shouting over a busy wine bar is your idea of purgatory, a walking club or a community choir is a slower route that may suit you much better.

Is there speed dating for over 50s near me?

In the larger cities, yes. In market towns the evenings run less often, and some rural counties have none at all. When we checked UK listings on 28 September 2026, the standard over-50s nights were billed for ages 50 to 65. Always check the age bracket in the ticket title before you book, because that tells you who will actually be in the room.

If you are in your late sixties or seventies, run a second search for “over 60s” nights and look at weekly interest groups alongside ticketed evenings; dating after 60 in the UK covers where people in their sixties and seventies meet across Britain.

When your own town comes up empty, look one stop down the main line at the nearest city. Taking the train in for an evening works well, provided you check the time of the last train home before you buy your ticket. London naturally has the widest choice, and once you have someone to meet there for a proper daytime date, our London page lists eight free galleries and venues with step-free access and exact station distances.

How to find one in five minutes

Work down these five places in order and stop as soon as you find a night within reach:

  1. Eventbrite. Type "over 50s speed dating" and the name of your town or nearest city, then try "over 50s singles" and "over 60s singles". If nothing shows up, search simply "speed dating" plus your city and scan the titles for the age bracket.
  2. Skiddle. Run the exact same searches. Skiddle carries plenty of regional pub and hotel nights that never appear on Eventbrite, so check both.
  3. Meetup. Ignore its Singles Over 50 topic page for the UK, which listed only 6 groups when we opened it on 28 September 2026. Instead, put "over 50s" and your town into the main Meetup search box. Walking, supper and theatre groups turn up there, and a group does not need "singles" in its name to be full of single people.
  4. Your local paper and community Facebook group. Independent nights run by a local hotel, golf club or village hall rarely pay ticketing sites to list them. They advertise in the local paper or the town Facebook group instead.
  5. The library and town-hall noticeboards. Worth a two-minute look when you are walking past: local bridge clubs, rambling groups and over-50s socials still pin up paper posters.

What happens on the night?

You check in with the host at the door and either get a paper scorecard and a pen or log into the organiser’s web page on your phone. Once the bell goes, everyone sits in pairs for four or five minutes, the host calls time, and one side of the room moves one seat along. Nobody has to invent a polite excuse to escape towards the bar, which saves everyone some acting. After each short chat you privately tick whether you would like to see that person again. If both of you tick yes, the organiser sends each of you the other’s contact details the next day.

Watch the wording on the ticket before you book: some evenings billed as “over-50s singles nights” or “mixers” have no timed rounds at all. They are simply a hired area of a bar where people mingle on their own, sometimes with an ice-breaker game from the host. Timed rounds suit people who dread standing by the wall holding a glass of Pinot Grigio; unstructured mingles suit people who hate being interrupted by a whistle after four minutes.

Put on clothes you already feel comfortable in (what you would wear to meet a friend for a nice supper, plus shoes you can stand in for two hours; see what to wear on a first date at 50). Aim to walk through the door fifteen minutes before the start time. The room is quiet then, the host has time to show you how the cards work, and chatting to the other early arrivals while you get a drink settles the nerves before the first bell.

Going on your own is often easier than going with a friend. In timed rounds you are seated one-to-one the whole evening, and not having your best friend watching from two tables away lets you relax and be yourself.

Four minutes goes fast, so skip the CV and ask one real question: “What tempted you out tonight?” or “What does a good Sunday look like for you?” work every time (more are on conversation starters when dating over 50). Save the divorce, the late spouse and the waiting list for your knee for a second date. And scribble two words of description (“spaniel, Whitby”) next to each name between rounds, because by ten o’clock twelve four-minute conversations blur into one.

When you mark your card, tick generously. A tick is not a marriage proposal; it only says you would happily spend forty-five minutes having a coffee in daylight to see if you get on.

Quieter options if loud bars are not for you

Speed dating almost always happens in a bar at eight in the evening, and after 55 a room with a low ceiling and eighty people shouting at once is not everyone’s finest hour. If that puts you off, look for places where you do something alongside people rather than auditioning across a table.

A walking club is the easiest starting point in Britain. Walking side by side takes the intensity out of talking to someone new, and when a pause arrives you both just look at the hedge. A community choir has the same warmth: you turn up every week for a shared job, and the fifteen-minute tea break in the middle does the socialising for you.

Supper clubs and beginner dance classes build the introductions into the structure of the evening. At a supper club you share a table for six or eight over food; at a ballroom, salsa or ceilidh class, the teacher rotates partners round the room every few minutes so you meet everyone without having to think of a chat-up line. Check when you book whether the class pairs single dancers up.

Volunteering on a team (a National Trust garden, a charity bookshop, a community café) puts you shoulder to shoulder with the same people every week.

And if you are retired or working part-time, look up u3a. In its own words, “Our members come together to learn for fun in retirement.” There are over 1000 local u3as across the UK, and to find yours, search by postcode or hometown on the u3a website. Nobody at u3a is officially on the market, which takes all the awkwardness out of the room: you get to know people over a term first, and if two people fancy a coffee afterwards, it happens naturally. For more on both routes, see dating in your 50s in the UK and how to meet people over 60.

Is it worth going?

It is worth trying once, and ideally twice. In a single evening you sit opposite eight or ten single people of your own age, and four minutes in person tells you things that three weeks of typing never can: how someone laughs, how they treat the bar staff, and whether there is any warmth between you. Nobody can hide behind a ten-year-old photograph across a two-foot table, and a person in front of you is much harder to edit.

The catch is that you are at the mercy of whoever bought a ticket for that particular Tuesday. Even when the age band is right, the room can simply miss the mark on a given week, which is why judging the whole format on one evening is a bit like judging pubs on one flat pint.

Because over-50s nights in most towns only run once every month or two, keeping a free profile on an over-50s dating site in between stops you waiting around on the calendar.

If nothing runs near you

When your nearest speed-dating night is forty miles away, your two real options are the weekly local groups above and a dating site built for people over 50. SilverSingles is one of those: its service agreement sets the minimum age at 50, and it costs nothing to join and look around. A free account lets you put up photos and a voice introduction, browse members in Flame and Gallery, and join the site’s online interest groups. Registration takes 5 short screens with no personality questionnaire.

Do three things on your first day so you only see people in Britain. Switch Global Visibility off under Me, Settings, Privacy & Visibility (check whether it is already off before you click), set your profile Country to United Kingdom, and in Gallery Filters choose Living in and United Kingdom. Sorting by Nearest first sits on the Advanced tab, which requires Silver Select, so on a free account you read the town on each card. All three settings are pictured on only see UK members.

Inside the site sit 22 online interest groups (counted on 16 September 2026), which are free chat rooms where you can talk to other members before sending anyone a private message; the glossary explains Groups, Flame, Gallery and the rest of the site’s labels.

The site also lists a feature called 1:1 Meetup, which is unrelated to the Meetup website: one member proposes a coffee or meal and others ask to join (hosting one requires Silver Select). Do not count on that feature in Britain for now: on 15 September 2026, the 1:1 Meetup list showed ten hosts: eight in the United States, one in Germany and one in England whose meet-up had already ended. The five still open to join were all in the United States or Germany.

What a free account cannot do is send a private message to anyone you choose. To send private messages to anyone, you need Silver Select, the single paid tier, and Free vs Silver Select sets out the rest of the comparison. If you prefer meeting over coffee to weeks of typing, tick the field inside Edit My Profile headed Willing To Meet In Person Next 7 Days?

And keep one plain fact in mind whether you meet someone at an event or online: SilverSingles states it does not conduct background checks on members.

Safety at events

At the event itself you are in a public room with a host and bar staff around you, which takes care of the evening. The sensible precautions are for the journey home and the first date afterwards.

Plan your own transport home before you go out: check the last train, park somewhere well lit, or book your own taxi, and decline lifts home from people you have only known for two hours. Keep your surname, workplace and phone number to yourself on the night; let the organiser’s next-day matching system handle the introductions, and only share a number once you have decided you want to.

When you meet one of your matches for a proper first date, WAY Widowed and Young has four rules written for bereaved partners that fit anyone over 50: “Always meet in a public place for a first date.” “Let a friend know where you're going.” “Arrange a check-in call during the date”, and “be very suspicious of any requests for cash”. Full details on spotting and reporting fraud in Britain are on the safety page, and behaviour to watch for as you get to know someone is on red flags when dating over 50.

Questions people ask

Is there speed dating for over 60s?
Yes, in many cities. Search Eventbrite and Skiddle for "over 60s speed dating" and "over 60s singles" with your town or nearest city. Standard over-50s nights often suit people in their early sixties too: the age bracket we saw on UK listings on 28 September 2026 was 50 to 65. If nothing runs near you, combine a local u3a or walking group with a free online profile; see dating after 60 in the UK.
How do I find singles events for over 50s near me?
Run a five-minute check across Eventbrite and Skiddle for "over 50s speed dating" and "over 50s singles" plus your town, then search Meetup for "over 50s" and your town (skip its UK Singles Over 50 topic page, which listed only 6 groups on 28 September 2026). Finish by checking your town's Facebook group and library noticeboard, where smaller hotel and village-hall nights advertise.
Is speed dating worth it over 50?
For an evening or two, yes. Sitting opposite eight or ten single people of your own age for four minutes each tells you straight away whether you would enjoy a coffee with any of them, with no old photos or endless typing in the way. Because you are limited to whoever booked that night, pair it with a free profile on an over-50s site; free vs Silver Select shows what a free account covers.
Do people go to speed dating on their own?
Most people do, and the format is built for it. Once the timed rounds start, everyone is paired up one-to-one at a table, so nobody is left standing alone by the bar. Walk in fifteen minutes early to get a drink and chat to the host before the room fills up.
